Analysis & Recommendations
Assessment and recommendations based on this reporting period.
In March 2026, Goodbye Geese conducted 179 site visits across 16 Detroit Parks sites. The overall average goose count per visit was 12.2, with a single-visit maximum of 100 geese observed.
Palmer Park (site 28) remained the most heavily impacted site with 45 visits and an average of 22.5 geese per visit. Lake Frances and the main field continue to be primary congregation areas, with geese frequently returning after hazing. Technicians noted wind challenges affecting board operations on multiple occasions. Two confirmed nests were discovered on Lake Frances islands by the end of the month, each with at least 3 eggs.
Chandler Park (site 6) was the second most problematic site with 24 visits and an average of 22.8 geese per visit. The main field remains a primary attractant with counts reaching as high as 100 on one visit early in the month. Consistent hazing brought counts down toward month-end.
Maheras-Gentry Park (site 22) showed persistent activity with 27 visits averaging 13.9 geese. The cove and harbor areas continue to attract geese, with board-based hazing employed on the water.
Roosevelt Park (site 33) showed excellent results with 19 visits and an average of only 3.5 geese, with the majority of visits reporting zero geese. This suggests successful deterrence at this site.
Riverside Park (site 32) received 26 visits with an average of 3.4 geese, showing moderate and manageable goose activity.
Several sites received minimal service: Historic Fort Wayne, Gabriel Richard Park, Hart Plaza, and Mt. Elliott Park had zero visits in March. Bristol Park, Coleman A. Young CC, and Patton Park each received only 1 visit. These appear to be lower-priority or seasonal sites.
Feeding remains a concern at Palmer Park where orange slices, corn flakes, and food scraps were found on multiple occasions, and a person living under the pavilion was observed tossing food to geese.
Recommendations
- Continue intensive hazing at Palmer Park with focus on Lake Frances area; consider camera installation to monitor return patterns and optimize visit timing.
- Increase visit frequency at Chandler Park, particularly morning visits when large flocks congregate on the main field before dispersing.
- Maintain current strategy at Maheras-Gentry Park; board hazing in the cove and harbor is effective but geese are persistent in these waterfront areas.
- Roosevelt Park results are exemplary; consider reducing visit frequency slightly to reallocate resources to higher-need sites like Chandler and Palmer.
- Assess whether low-visit sites (Historic Fort Wayne, Gabriel Richard, Hart Plaza, Mt. Elliott) need March coverage or if seasonal service start dates should be formalized.
- Address the feeding issue observed at Palmer Park (orange slices, corn flakes, food scraps found) by coordinating with city parks department on signage and enforcement.
